Hands-on Learning
New members start building early.
Students move quickly from interest to real work in the shop, with older members training the next generation through actual hardware.
University of Illinois Baja SAE
Off-Road Illini Baja SAE designs, develops, and builds an off-road vehicle each year for competition in the SAE Baja Collegiate Design Series.
Who is Baja
We design, develop, and construct an off-road vehicle each year for competition in the SAE Baja Collegiate Design Series.
As a team, we are committed to maintaining the high standard of engineering excellence for which the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is known. From concept work and design reviews to fabrication, testing, and final assembly, we apply the skills we have learned in class, in the shop, and in industry so we can build the best car possible.
Baja is more than a competition team. It is a hands-on learning environment where members gain experience with real design constraints, manufacturing decisions, troubleshooting, and teamwork under deadline. Every season asks students to take ownership of real hardware and contribute to a vehicle that must perform in the real world, not just on paper.
Our team structure allows members to become actively involved regardless of age or skill level. We operate by the mantra of training new members quickly and getting a tool in their hands, so if hands-on work is what you are looking for, you have found it.

Competition Standard
Design choices are shaped by endurance, manufacturability, serviceability, and how the car will perform when it matters.
Where We Work
The Engineering Student Projects Laboratory (ESPL) is home to many of the student societies on campus. We share lab space with the other Society of Automotive Engineers teams as well as Rube Goldberg, iRobotics, and Eco-Concept.
Behind the Engineering Sciences Building, the ESPL supports multidisciplinary engineering RSOs and gives students access to the kind of experiential learning that turns classroom ideas into real hardware. It is where design reviews become welded frames, where testing plans become late nights in the shop, and where new members learn by doing.
We are lucky because we get access to some great machinery in this lab, and it is a great place to learn fabrication skills and get the hands-on work you have been looking for. So join us at Baja and get started in the ESPL today.
Our Legacy
The Off-Road Illini has long been proud to be affiliated with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and we are deeply grateful to the students, alumni, and supporters who helped shape the team into what it is today. Their time, effort, and ambition built the foundation that allows each new generation of members to learn, compete, and keep moving the program forward.
At the same time, we recognize that some logos, imagery, and design choices associated with past cars no longer reflect current university standards or the values we hold as a team. Those elements are part of our history, but they do not represent who we are today, and we want the way we present that history to be respectful, accurate, and aligned with the program we are continuing to build.
